Abstract

With increasing attention to non-motorized modes of transportation, the modeling of pedestrian traffic on urban crossings has been increasingly investigated in the literature. One of the main measures of effectiveness used to evaluate the operational performance of pedestrian crossings is delay, which is defined as the time that a pedestrian waits before crossing. Two of the major modeling approaches for estimating the average pedestrian delay are those presented by the Highway Capacity Manual – HCM, and those used by simulation software, such as VISSIM. The main objective of this work is to compare these two tools to estimate the average delay per pedestrian in signalized crossings. For this, two crossings of an intersection located in the city of Fortaleza were analyzed.  It was concluded that the higher the degree of pedestrian’s violation of the red light, the better the estimation by VISSIM in comparison to that performed by HCM.
