Abstract

The fatigue cracking could be related to a small-scale phenomenon (microcracks). Authors have used the fine portion of the hot mix asphalt (HMA), known as fine aggregate matrix (FAM), to estimate the HMA behavior. This study aims to evaluate the influence of the nominal maximum size (NMS) of the fine aggregates in the HMA cracking resistance. As from the HMA design, three corresponding FAMs with different aggregates’ NMS were designed.  As higher is the NMS of FAM, the lower is the binder content. The FAMs were subjected to the semicircular bending fracture test in order to measure the dissipated energy during the crack propagation at two temperatures: 15 and 25°C. The results at 15°C indicated that as the NMS decreases, the HMA resistance to cracking increases. At 25°C, it is believed that other damage mechanisms occur simultaneously, making difficult the mixtures ranking based on the NMS
