Data collected through the On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) interface, present in domestic cars manufactured since 2009, was used in the calibration of the microscopic fuel consumption model of the AIMSUN simulator. Calibration of the consumption model required data for instantaneous velocity, intake air flow and oxygen content in the air/fuel mixture. The simulator consumption model was calibrated following the modal approach using regression for acceleration and constant velocities modes and simple mean for idle and deceleration modes. To validate the model, measured and estimated fuel consumption in driving cycles in urban areas were compared. The results indicate the suitability of the method to evaluate fuel consumption by vehicles in urban road networks. In addition, the OBD-calibrated model of four types of vehicles was used in the simulation study of current and future scenarios in the context of a road expansion project. By means of a comparative approach between scenarios, it is shown that the estimation with calibrated parameters produces different and more reliable indicators than those obtained with the original parameters of the simulator.Downloads
